CALMER OUTINGS

Nervous & reactive dogs

Browse Northumberland’s bookable dog fields by location and follow each operator’s link to check availability. Private hire can reduce unexpected encounters, but no field or public walk can be guaranteed trigger-free or escape-proof for every dog.

BEFORE YOU GO

Helpful details before you visit.

01

Ask what ‘private’ really means

Check whether your booking gives exclusive use, whether dogs can be seen in neighbouring fields, and whether the entrance, car park or waiting area is shared. Ask if there is a buffer between appointments so you can arrive and leave without meeting the next dog.

02

Check fencing for your dog

Ask about fence height, gaps at ground level, double gates and nearby livestock or roads. Read each field’s rules carefully: enclosed does not mean escape-proof, especially for determined jumpers or diggers.

03

Choose calm public walks carefully

Visit without your dog first if possible. Look for wide paths, long sightlines, several exits and places to create distance. Try quieter times, avoid narrow routes and turn away calmly before your dog becomes overwhelmed.

04

Get help when you need it

A sudden change in behaviour can be linked to pain or illness, so speak to your vet. For ongoing reactivity or aggression, ask for qualified behaviour support and use calm, reward-based methods while managing distance from known triggers.
